JJ Grey and Mofro; The Bluebird

Friday, 8 PM

Listening to JJ Grey and Mofro (though previously, just Mofro), and you may experience what it's like navigating through southern swamplandia: there's the freewheeling waters of sound--a sludgy hodgepodge with your typical bass and Fender showman and hard, boxy percussion, but with the added soul-groove of saxophone, trumpet and organ--piloted through by the vocals of JJ Grey himself, which, despite the current of melody, manage to thread together engaging narrative. Can it really be a surprise then that Grey refers to himself as "just a salmon swimming upstream?" Catch this salmon at the Bluebird tomorrow night.
