For the true metal set - the denim-clad, bearded defenders of the faith - it doesn't get much better than Indianapolis doom trio The Gates of Slumber. 2008's Conqueror is a landmark release in the doom metal genre, and the two records since then have been nearly as essential. "By this axe I rule," guitarist and vocalist Karl Simon intones at the climax of "Conqueror," and he isn't kidding. Year-end metal lists have been heralding The Gates of Slumber's releases for a while, so it's cool to see that they still play cheap hometown gigs. With a slew of great openers playing everything from High on Fire-inspired anthems (Thorr-Axe) to blustery black metal (Hordes of Nebulah), there's plenty of ways to get your eight bucks' worth. Stop by Indy's Jukebox tonight and get trapped in the web.
