Being an avid music fan, I always look out for bands that exude talent and play instruments as if they were an extension of their bodies. With so much synthesizing and auto-tune mechanically corroding today's music, it's a breath of fresh air to see three bands in one night that all bring uninhibited and unhinged talent to the stage. That's what I got to experience after seeing The Calumet Reel, Co., and Matt Pond at The Bishop tonight.
The night started off with The Calumet Reel, a local band with a rugged, soulful edge. And holy harmony, every time the three guitarists sang together, a perfect wave of sound hovered over the room; their blend was spectacular. The lead singer's raspy tone made me nostalgic for the days where music remained untouched by machines and every little nuance was heard. One of their songs, "Florida Squeeze," came to life as he articulated each lyric with emotion. The Calumet Reel's soulful sounds started the night off the right way.
Then Co. hit the stage with their explosive instrumentals. The drummer of this band was outstanding. It was almost as if he was giving each song its own heart beat. His drumming, along with strong vocals and intense guitar, made each song more powerful than the next. They were masters of the true rock sound, with an indie edge that made them fit the category of modern rock. My favorite song of theirs wass "You Win," a rock song with a beat and a hook that made it impossible for you to sit still.
Around 10:30 pm, Matt Pond PA performed their first song. As soon as I heard them sing, I was taken in by their lyrics, which gave brilliant insight into the imagery and emotions that convey the band's experiences. One of my favorite songs of the night was a song called "Specks." The images of the "specks of silver in the evening sky, specks of gold in the river running from the deep moonlight", tied perfectly into a bigger theme of beauty and nature. Throughout the rest of his performance, Matt Pond continued to deliver songs that were thought provoking, well crafted, and musically innovative.
The last few songs they decided to play were the best glimpse into their dynamic. "Giving It All Away," was executed with the most passion and style I had seen from a band in a very long time. The lead singer, clearly worn from a long and exhilarating show, laid it all on the table when it came to this song. The performance exuded a confidence that only comes from playing song after song, and still knowing that the audience is captivated all the while. The band then slowed down the feel of the show by playing an acoustic rendition of "Lily Two", with just voices and one guitar strumming. Once again, the group's raw talent filled the room.
I would recommend Matt Pond to anyone that wants to hear how a great song is written, executed, and performed. If they ever come back to town, jump on the chance to get a ticket.
