A new banner honoring the 1973 Final Four women's basketball team will be hung in the rafters of Assembly Hall during halftime of the Jan. 19 game against Minnesota.

The Indiana Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced via press release that the department will be celebrating "Indiana women's basketball's greatest era" on the weekend of Jan. 18-19, 2014. The weekend, which features a Jan. 19 game against Minnesota, will celebrate when the Hoosiers made an AIAW Final Four appearance in 1973 and a pair of Elite Eight appearances in 1972 and 1974.

The AIAW served as the sanctioning body for women's basketball until the NCAA took over operations in 1982.

The players and staff members from those teams have been invited back to Bloomington to be recognized during the IU men's basketball game on Jan. 18 against Northwestern. The banner itself will be hung during halftime of the game against Minnesota.

"Becoming a varsity sport in 1971, our women's basketball program compiled an incredible four-year record of 62-15, advanced to two Elite Eights and reached the 1973 Final Four," IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass said in a release. "We are thrilled to give this amazing group of women the recognition they so richly deserve"
