The No. 11 IU water polo team played three games this past weekend in the self-hosted Fluid Four. While the team came away with a 2-1 record, the two wins were against a club team from Montreal (Dollard Des Ormeaux) and a DIII school (Washington & Jefferson), and the loss came to a powerful No. 10 Long Beach State squad by a score of 7-4.
The act of beating two lesser teams and losing by three goals to the team ranked one spot ahead you alone seems like it could merit a slight drop in the rankings. But if there is a drop, it seems the furthest it could go is one spot, if that.
No. 12 Princeton went 5-0 over the weekend, but all victories came over unranked foes.
No. 13 UC Santa Barbara's wins over No. 9 San Jose State and No. 18 Pacific give the team a strong chance of possibly leapfrogging IU in the rankings, but a six-goal loss to No. 14 UC Davis may hold the Gauchos back.
Besides Princeton and UC Santa Barbara, no one else seems to have put together a strong enough weekend to top IU in Wednesday's new rankings.
