The IU flavor in the Portland region on Thursday will extend to the early games as former Hoosiers guard Steve Alford will lead his No. 5 seed New Mexico against No. 12 seed Long Beach State in the second game of the afternoon.

As Alford took the podium Wednesday afternoon, he reflected on what type of seasons the Hoosiers have had and how grateful he was to head back to Bloomington in early December for the 25-year anniversary of winning the 1987 National Championship.

It's been fun. It's the 25th anniversary of when I played there in '87. They did a great thing with our title team for the Stetson game in early December. They honored our team. They did it in a first class manner. It was a really neat experience for our team to get back and get in that environment. And then get in that environment where it's winning again makes it that much more special.

You root and pull for them like crazy as an alum. There have been some hard times, and hopefully through the hard times Tom and his staff have done a terrific time. And it's neat seeing them being at a national level again and competing at a very high level, because that's what Indiana is, and I think Tom and his staff understands that and that's what they're building towards.
