Now that IU's season is complete, I'll take a look back at the accolades of the six seniors from Coach Lyon's 2008 recruiting class.
(This feature story documenting senior goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell's career ran in the IDS on Thursday, September 29.)
Since then, on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Northwestern, IU earned a 1-0 IU victory, Campbell notched her 13th career shutout (and second of the season) moving her into a tie for second on the career list. (Ashley Davis is first with 15 career shutouts.) It was her 17th career win in goal, 13 of which were clean sheets.
IU Coach Mick Lyon told me after that game that she made three "world-class" saves to preserve the 0-0 tie. (I did not ask of which three he thought so highly.)
Despite the result on Senior Day, she told me today in the grand scheme of her Hoosier career, it's "not going to be that big of a deal at all. We've accomplished so much more than that one moment.
"It's hard to forget about something that's so fresh," she said with a laugh. (Oh, how time heals all wounds?) "Looking back, it won't make that big of an affect."
Her career ended in the 56' of Ohio State's 3-0 win Sunday. Campbell had made three saves ... and surrendered three goals. IU Coach Mick Lyon inserted sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Flower, a Columbus, OH native, for the final 34 minutes.
He explained his decision after the match.
"Shannon's coming back," Lyon said. "It's a way to pay some respect to Lindsay. We're proud of everything she's done. It's a way of honoring Campbell."
Campbell, personally, has accomplished a significant amount in her four seasons in an IU uniform. The 17 wins are good for fifth in program history. She posted a 1.26 goals against average and recorded 168 career saves, placing her fourth all-time.
She played 4075:24 in goal for Lyon.
