Another week, another win and more accolades for IU men's soccer team.
For the second time this season senior midfielder Alec Purdie and junior goalie Luis Soffner were named Big Ten Player of the Week honors. He shares the Offensive Player of the Week award with Ohio State's Chris Hegngi.
Purdie and Soffner led the Hoosiers to their conference opening win 1-0 Friday against No. 16 Penn State at Bill Armstrong Stadium to improve Indiana's record to (6-0-2, 1-0)
Purdie scored the Hoosiers only goal on a header in the 78th minute off an assist from sophomore A.J. Corrado. The goal was Purdie's fifth of the season; the senior leads the team in goals as well leading the conference in points with 12. Purdie is tied with Hegngi for the Big Ten lead in goals scored.
Soffner won his second Defensive Player of the Week award in 2011 thanks to his fourth shutout of the season. Soffner has anchored a Hoosier defense that has only surrendered four goals in eight games. The junior goalie has already eclipsed his shutout total from 2010 when he recorded three and he has not allowed a goal in 339:29 as well as holding opponents to a Big Ten leading 0.49 goals-against average. Soffner also leads the Big Ten in save percentage (.892) and saves per game (4.12).
Purdie and Soffner joined teammates Tommy Meyer and Eriq Zavaleta as the other Hoosiers to win Player of the Week honors.
The No. 7 Hoosiers will continue the Big Ten schedule when they travel to Madison to take on Wisconsin next Sunday.
