In what looked like quite possibly would be their third overtime game of the season against a ranked opponent, redshirt senior Alec Purdie headed in a ball from sophomore A.J. Corrado in the 78th minute, giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead and eventual win over No. 16 Penn State Friday night at Jerry Yeagley Field. The No. 7 team in the nation moves to 6-0-2 on the season.

IU has never lost a Big Ten opener in 21 seasons of the soccer conference's existence, now moving to 18-0-3 in conference openers.

IU Coach Todd Yeagley's team went scoreless in the first half for the third time this season, and it was only the first time in which they failed to score in the first half, yet still pull out a win.

Penn State entered the game without giving up a first half goal during their seven games this season, and the Hoosiers had outscored their opponents 11-2 in the first half. Something had to give.

And although IU did fail to score in the first 45 minutes, Purdie, who leads the team now with five goals and 12 points, continued to thrive in his breakout senior season, and added his third game-winning goal of the season.
