Media was allowed to see the first 25 minutes of practice on Tuesday. Much of it was stretching and warm-ups, so I'm afraid we did not got a lot of new info about the team. That said, here are a few nuggets from the practice:
- For the first practice time this fall in practices open to the media, referees were present at the practice field. This allowed the team to do more game situations, including a four minute drill.
- All five quarterbacks took snaps at practice, though junior Adam Follett and senior Teddy Schell did little more than hand the ball off to running backs. Of the contenders to start, sophomore Edward Wright-Baker was again playing with the first-team and was arguably the most impressive, though sophomore Dusty Kiel and true freshman Tre Roberson were solid as well. Head Coach Kevin Wilson said he does not yet know when he will name a starter, but overall seemed pleased with the quarterbacks compared to last week.
- Junior Darius Willis practiced at running back after an injury-riddled start to the fall camp, though Wilson said he is still getting back up to speed. Wilson revealed that two tiers have begun to emerge recently in practice, though nothing is finalized. The top group consists of sophomore junior college transfer Stephen Houston, true freshman D'Angelo Roberts from Bloomington North and redshirt freshman Matt Perez. The next group is Willis and sophomores Nick Turner and Antonio Banks. The team used a two back formation for much of Tuesday's practice and Wilson indicated that it will be used to some extent during the season.
