The IU men's basketball program picked up a commitment from highly ranked 2014 guard James Blackmon Jr., according to multiple media outlets. The freshman from Fort Wayne's Bishop Luers is ESPN's No. 1 shooting guard in the class and the No. 5 overall player.
Blackmon Jr. took an unofficial visit to Bloomington Thursday night for the IU vs. Towson football game and committed shortly after.
He is son of James Blackmon Sr., a former Kentucky standout and McDonalds All-American. The elder Blackmon is the current men's basketball coach at Bishop Luers. His son plays AAU basketball for Spiece Indy Heat.
According to ESPN recruiting analyst John Stovall, "James is a smooth as silk combo guard. He has a sweet stroke with range to 20 feet. James Jr. has a solid handle and is a good and willing passer. He is a good scorer and knows how to set his opponent up for his dribble drives to the basket. Blackmon is an excellent prospect with great upside."
A phone call to Blackmon Sr. was not immediately returned, but we will provide more information when we get it.
