Per IU:
Sophomore outfielder Alex Dickerson has collected hisfirst All-America recognition for the 2010 season, as the Poway, Calif.,
native was named a Louisville Slugger First Team All-American by College
Baseball Newspaper. It marks the second year in a row that Dickerson has
received All-America recognition, as the 2010 Big Ten Player of the Year was
named a Freshman All-American in 2009.
Dickerson\0xB9s honor represents the fourth All-America honor in the last three
years for IU, which had just six All-Americans in school history prior to
Tracy Smith\0xB9s tenure. Dickerson is the fifth Hoosier to earn first team
recognition, matching the selection of former teammate Eric Arnett, who was
a first teamer in 2009. Josh Phegley garnered All-America laurels in both
2008 (second team) and 2009 (third) under Smith\0xB9s watch.
The sophomore was joined on the first team by Big Ten Pitcher of the Year
Alex Wimmers of Ohio State, as the duo were the only two conference players
to take home the honor. Ball State\0xB9s Kolbrin Vitek (utility) was the only
other first team honoree from the region. Dickerson is one of three players
who were recognized as Freshman All-Americans last year that are on the
first team this year (Virginia\0xB9s Danny Hultzen and Utah\0xB9s C.J. Cron are the
others).
Dickerson wrapped up his second season in an IU uniform with a .419 average,
99 hits (tied for third all-time), 24 home runs (second), 75 RBI (fifth), 19
doubles (seventh) and an .805 slugging percentage (third). He is currently
fifth nationally in home runs and total bases, and is eighth in slugging
percentage. He will enter his junior season with 38 longballs, just nine
home runs shy of the school record. He also carries a 17-game hitting streak
into the 2011 season.
Dickerson is one of 38 players nationally invited to USA Baseball's
Collegiate Team Trials. The team will go through a week of trials in July at
USA Baseball's facility in Cary, N.C., at which point the team will be cut
to a 22-man roster. The final roster will play a month-long schedule against
international teams in the United States, Taiwan and Japan, while those who
do not make the team will return to their summer teams. He will play for the
Cape Cod League\0xB9s Wareham Gatemen prior to the Team USA trials.
The Poway, Calif., native is also one of three Big Ten players and one of 25
players nationally to be a semifinalist for the 2010 Dick Howser Trophy, the
NCBWA announced. Dickerson is joined on the list by fellow conference
members Alex Wimmers (Ohio State) and Ben Heath (Penn State). Five different
conferences had three semifinalists each.
