Amid the IU women's tennis team's spring season-opening wins this weekend, some sad news came to light. Former team captain Karie Schlukebir Pennock passed away after an 11-year battle with cancer. She was 29.

Originally of Kalamazoo, she was diagnosed with cancer during her freshman year at IU in 1998. She continued to compete for the Hoosiers as much as her chemotherapy would allow, completing her four years of eligibility over the course of six seasons. She served as captain in 2004, when the Hoosiers won the Big Ten, and until recently was an assistant coach at Florida International University. She continued to remain athletically active, running in the Boston Marathon last Apil.

More information on her life, career and battle with cancer to come in an upcoming issue of the IDS.
