The Hoosiers were leading 2-3 going into the eighth inning, but then they allowed a four-run rally from which they never recovered.
IU went on to lose 6-3 to Eastern Illinois in Lakeland, Fla., at Henley Field. Once again, they had a rough day on the mound. The only difference this time was that the other team didn't share in their misfortune. Junior pitcher Chris Squires (1-1) started his second game of the season and absorbed the loss.
He gave up 18 hits, but limited the Panthers to only six runs -- all earned, suggesting that the IU defense behind him has improved from previous performances. IU didn't commit an error for the first time since March 10., when it defeated Morehead State 18-3.
Freshman pitcher Drew Leininger followed Squires. He pitched less than one inning and only faced one batter.
IU also had a tough day from the batter's box. Only senior right fielder Chris Hervey totaled more than one hit, finishing 2-5 on the day. Junior catcher Josh Phegley was the most productive batter, as he went 1-4, scored a run and had one RBI. With the exception of Hervey and Phegley, only four other batters had a hit on the day. EIU's four errors also should have given IU a shot at further offense.
IU's ineffectiveness can be credited to EIU pitchers. Brian Morrell pitched five innings, struck out six and only allowed one earned run, Matt Miller relieved Morrell for a scoreless inning and Jordan Kreke only allowed one earned run in two innings.
IU has now lost three consecutive games in its spring break, the next opportunity for a win will come against Stetson tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
