The attendance was listed at 994 for the IU-Northwestern game on Saturday, Dec. 20 at Assembly Hall. (James Brosher/Indiana Daily Student)

So on the Hoosier Scoop, the Blog of the Herald-Times there were two conflicting posts that i would like to share then maybe get some reaction on. These posts come after the IU men's team lost 55-42 against Northeastern on Monday night at Assembly Hall.

The first says the following:

"While waiting for this team - and subsequent men's teams - to develop, why don't you support the IU women's team, which has a seven-game winning streak going? Tickets are never a problem."

The second likely meant as a response to the first says the following:

"Go to a womens basketball game? Are you kidding? You couldn't pay me to go sit through that bore, let alone park and walk to it. Why do they even have a womens team? That's about as funny as asking me to pay hundreds of dollars to go watch the mens football...'ahem'...team."

Why do they have women's basketball? I would love to hear someone ask this question at schools like Tennessee or UCONN. This is a question i have heard before and it is sad that people think this. I can see how women's basketball does not get the same attention as men's does. One reason is that is has not been around for as long. The Hoosiers didn't start women's basketball until the mid 1970s. Another reason is that women for a long time no matter if its right or wrong have been discriminated against in the past. I do think that women's basketball and women's sports in general give women great opportunities and they deserve to have the same opportunities to participate in sports that men do.

What are your thoughts on the matter? What purpose do you think women's sports serve? I don't think the women's program at IU will ever equal the popularity of the men's game, but i think it will build more support over time.
