Just in case you want to hear some IU sports related news that doesn't invovle "Kevlin Sampson..."
I finally got in touch with former IU captain Tracy Porter to talk with him about the NFL combine this weekend and the upcoming draft. CLICK HERE to read the article from the IDS on the interview. But there were some things he and his agent, Paul Lawrence said that didn't make the article that I found pretty interesting.
I asked Porter what his plans were for the NFL draft, and he told me that if he gets invited he will probably go to New York for it. I didn't realize that players got invited to attend the draft. For some reason it never occured to me the NFL wanted certain guys there and would invite them. Porter said otherwise he would either watch the draft in Bloomington or in his hometown near New Orleans. I'm hoping he gets invited to the draft, Porter seems like the kind of guy who would have a crazy Dieon Sanders like outfit on. (And I mean that in the most positive of ways.)
Porter said that his goal for the 40 was to break 4.2 seconds. That is absurd. I have no clue what Porter's 40 time was before he started training, but if he breaks 4.2 one would think he's going to be a first rounder. That's Devin Hester fast.
While Porter was polite about the combine and referred to it as a blessing to be invited there...It seemed to me like he thought it was a little overhyped, (as do I.) He mentioned the three cone test and the vertical leaps as tests that he can't see having any real merit to how good a player someone is.
Porter's agent, Paul Lawrence, said after the combine Porter might participate in a 'Pro day' at a later date. Essentially a pro day is like the combine, only it will be just Porter and Hardy training for certain scouts. Lawrence said the date of the pro day is undetermined, and he said he wasn't sure if Porter would participate. Basically, if Porter does well at the combine this weekend, he's not going to participate. It's more of a second chance for prospects, if they happened to have an off weekend at the combine.
Well, that's all I got for ya, be sure to check updates here on UndertheRock, i'll try to get in touch with Porter and his agent when their workouts have concluded at the combine.
