Various media outlets are reporting that former IU men's basketball coach Bob Knight has retired from Texas Tech. His son Pat, a former player at IU, will take over the team.
Coach Knight led IU to three NCAA championships, five Final Fours and 11 Big Ten championships from 1971 to 2000. His 1976 team that went 32-0 en route to the NCAA championship is considered one of the best teams in history. It was the last team to go undefeated and win a national title. Knight is the all-time leader in career coaching victories at the men's Division I level.
Knight was fired in 2000 for violating the "zero-tolerance" policy set down by former IU President Myles Brand. Mike Davis took over the program before retiring after the 2006 season. Knight's firing was a controversial decision which divided the Hoosier fan base to this day.
In honor of Knight, here is one of his classic press conferences in the NCAA tournament.
What are your best Knight moments at IU? Was he the greatest coach in college history? Should he have been fired?
