Indiana baseball’s offense never found a consistent rhythm this weekend.
After entering its series against Iowa as one of the hottest hitting teams in the Big Ten, the Hoosiers combined for just eight runs across three games, falling to the Hawkeyes 12-2, 9-2 and 7-4 at Bart Kaufman Field. The sweep dropped their record to 19-25 and 6-15 in conference play on the season.
The pattern was consistent throughout the weekend. Iowa’s offense struck early in all three games, forcing Indiana to play from behind. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers struggled to convert scoring opportunities when they did arise.
That trend showed again in Sunday’s finale.
Iowa took advantage of an early defensive miscue in the first inning to score the game’s first run before adding two more in the second on a two-run triple from senior infielder Gable Mitchell. The Hawkeyes extended the lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run from redshirt junior infielder Ben Swails and an RBI double from senior outfielder Miles Risley, pushing the advantage to 5-0.
Two more unearned runs in the fifth stretched the lead to 7-0, putting Indiana in another early hole.
But Indiana had chances to respond.
The Hoosiers loaded the bases in the second inning but came away empty, one of several missed opportunities that defined the game.
Indiana eventually broke through in the fifth on a double-play ball from sophomore right fielder Hogan Denny that scored sophomore third baseman Will Moore.
Indiana showed its best offensive stretch of the day in the sixth inning, putting together a three-run rally to further cut into the deficit.
The Hoosiers strung together quality at-bats to start the inning, beginning with a single from sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie. Sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley followed with a hit through the right side, and a misplay in the outfield allowed Koskie to score while Hanley moved into scoring position. Indiana continued to apply pressure as sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian drove in another run on a groundout.
Freshman catcher Owen ten Oever added another single, and pinch hitter freshman outfielder Cal Gates delivered an RBI double to left-center field to bring Indiana within three runs 7-4.
The rally stopped there.
Indiana left three runners on base in the sixth and failed to score again, finishing the game without capitalizing on late opportunities.
“It comes down to the ability to execute,” Mercer said postgame Sunday. “We had guys in scoring position with less than two outs, and we were right there.”
That urgency showed up in key moments.
“You want to do it so bad that you get yourself away from being able to execute the plan,” Mercer said.
The result was missed chances at the plate and defensive mistakes that Iowa converted into runs.
“They didn’t just hammer us,” Mercer said. “We gave them opportunities and they walked through and did a better job.”
The offensive struggles weren’t limited to Sunday.
Across the three games, Iowa consistently executed in key situations.
The Hawkeyes scored multiple runs with two outs and capitalized on defensive mistakes, while Indiana was unable to deliver timely hits when opportunities presented themselves.
The struggles stood out even more given Indiana’s recent form.
Entering the weekend, the Hoosiers had averaged 9.15 runs in their previous 13 games and were one of the most productive offenses in the conference during that stretch. Against Iowa, that production never materialized.
“You have guys in scoring position, you’re right there, and a couple times we didn’t come through,” Mercer said. “When that happens, you’re going to come up short.”
With just 10 regular season games remaining, Mercer emphasized the need to move forward.
“You just have to pick yourself up and get back to work,” Mercer said. “The expectations don’t change.”
Indiana’s chances to gain ground in the Big Ten standings are waning after being swept at home by Iowa. The Hoosiers will look to rebound at 6 p.m. Tuesday against the University of Louisville at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.
