COLUMN: Podcasts to help you get through finals week

melrobbins.jpg

As the semester comes to an end, students are putting in their last-ditch effort to end the semester strong before the holidays. With final exams, essays and group projects that need to be finished, you might need some words of encouragement to keep you going. So, here are five podcast episodes that will help you get through finals week:

“On Purpose with Jay Shetty”

As podcast host Jay Shetty says, if you wouldn’t say it to your friend, then stop saying it to yourself! In “On Purpose with Jay Shetty,” Shetty shares why being hard on yourself holds you back, and how much your life can change if you just show yourself a little compassion.

In the episode “Constantly Overthinking or Doubting Yourself? (Do THIS 5-Minute Reset to Break Your Negative Spiral!) Shetty teaches you how to silence your inner critic, talk to yourself like a friend, rewire your brain for positivity, rest without feeling guilty and stop letting negativity control you.

This episode specifically is not only one of my favorites, but shares something I think every college student can benefit from. Especially during crunch time, it can be easy to beat yourself up over school. Maybe you didn’t get the grade you wanted on a test or you didn’t do well on your final presentation. In this episode, you will learn that punishing yourself won’t help you. The best thing you can do is to forgive yourself so you can move forward, not only through finals, but life as well.

You can listen to “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” wherever you find your podcasts, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music.

“The Mindset Mentor”

If you are a STEM major or just someone who finds comfort in knowing the facts, then "The Mindset Mentor” is the podcast for you.

The host of “The Mindset Mentor,” Rob Dial, blends neurology, neurobiology, psychology and cognitive behavioral therapy that helps you better understand the connection between the mind and body.

In the episode “How to Push Yourself to Be Happy Even When Life is Hard,” Dial uses neuroscience to teach you how to rewire your brain to begin to think more positively, even in the most chaotic situations.

You can listen to “The Mindset Mentor” anywhere you get your podcasts.

“The Mel Robbins Podcast”

We are often told that our 20s are going to be the best times of our lives. But that is not necessarily true. Most students, like myself, that experience college in their 20s know that being at this stage of life comes with a lot of anxiety, uncertainty and pressure.

If you are like me and feeling like life is holding you on by a thread, then the episode "Feeling Lost in your 20s? You need to Hear This"  from “The Mel Robbins Podcast” is for you. Not only does it validate these feelings of stress, but it explains why this time in our lives can be so stressful.

Podcast host Mel Robbins mentions multiple unique factors that cause stress for people in their 20s and offers advice on how to combat these issues and move forward.

You can listen to “The Mel Robbins Podcast” many places including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and Amazon Music.

“anything goes with emma chamberlain”

If you want to feel like you are getting advice from a friend or older sister, "anything goes with emma chamberlain” is for you. Hosted by social media personality and businesswoman Emma Chamberlain, the podcast shares lighthearted advice based on her own experiences.

In the episode, “staying motivated, advice session,” she gives advice on how to develop helpful habits, make time for yourself and find fun in every aspect of life.

Out of all the podcast episodes in this column, this one is the easiest to listen to. If you are just walking to class or cleaning your room, and want something more entertaining, with motivational tools sprinkled throughout, this episode would be a great choice.

You can listen to “anything goes with emma chamberlain” anywhere you get your podcasts.

“The Psychology of your 20s”

If you are like me and put off studying because the thought of sitting down and doing it is unbearable, then "The Psychology of your 20s is for you.

“How to train your brain to do hard things” shares tips on how to use behavioral psychology to train your brain to get those dreaded tasks done, such as the “5-minute rule,” visualization and the power of persona. The “5-minute rule” is one of the easiest ways to train your brain to do hard things. When you are committing to something for only five minutes, it makes the task or whatever you need to do less intimidating and easier to start.

I love this episode because it doesn’t overload you with emotion, and the tips suggested were simple and easy to do. Sometimes when I listen to motivational podcasts like these, I like them to be short and sweet.

You can follow “The Psychology of your 20s” podcast many places, including on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music.
