PRESS RELEASE: Skate and Scare

city of bloomington (!)

The following is a press release by Michelle Moss for the City of Bloomington.

City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation needs volunteers 16 years and older to help at this year’s Skate and Scare on October 18 at the Frank Southern Ice Arena. The arena is transformed into a Halloween haven where participants can skate around the ice rink under fun lighting effects and spooky tunes, or they can take a stroll through the haunted house that is set up within the mini-maze of locker rooms. Looking for a great time this Halloween, and a reason to dress up in costume? Then this opportunity is for you. Volunteers under the age of 18 must have an Underage Waiver of Liability signed by a parent or guardian and must bring it with them when they arrive for their shift. On-site training provided. Volunteer actors for the haunted house will be given instructions before the day of the event.

Available shifts:

  • Shift #1- 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
    • Volunteers help set up and bring the theme of the haunted house to life
  • Shift #2- 5:30 p.m. -  9:30 p.m.
    • Volunteers will be characters in the haunted house
      • Costumes for haunted house volunteers will be provided; skating skills are not required

Autism/Asperger's Better Living Empowerment Society

Autism/Aspergers Better Living Empowerment Society (ABLES) was started in 2000 by staff from the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at the request of parents looking for activities for their adult family members. Currently, ABLES are facing the possibility of having to disband, as their original support team is retired, has relocated, or is no longer able to lead this group. Volunteers 18 years and older are needed to help with facilitating the monthly meeting, which happens on the first Wednesday of each month at College Mall Food Court for supper and conversation. Volunteers will also help plan and coordinate 1 to 2 monthly outing activities. Training will be provided. This is a long-term commitment.
