The following is a press release written by Marion Banzhaf for the Friends of Lake Monroe
Friends of Lake Monroe is sponsoring a bus tour of the southern part of Lake Monroe Watershed on Saturday, June 21 from 10 am to 2:30 pm. Participants will learn about this valuable resource with stops along the way. Because Lake Monroe Watershed has 10,000 acres and 100 miles of shoreline, this tour will focus on the South Fork Salt Creek tributary, and will go through parts of Monroe and Jackson Counties.
The tour will highlight various sites in the watershed, including Cutright State Recreation Area, South Fork Salt Creek at Maumee, Kurtz Gaging station, historic Hickory Grove Church and the outlet at Lake Monroe dam. Local experts will provide information both on the bus and at designated stops. The focus will be about the geology of the area, water quality issues, including how local agriculture influences the watershed, vulnerable areas of the Hoosier National Forest, and how lake levels are regulated.
Local experts include:
Dr. Sherry Mitchell-Bruker, founder and president, Friends of Lake Monroe
Maggie Sullivan, Watershed Coordinator, Friends of Lake Monroe
Victoria Leffel, Research Geologist, Indiana Geological and Water Survey
Jeff Stant, retired director, Indiana Forest Alliance
Tyler Blankenship, Natural Resources Specialist, Army Corps of Engineers
Participants will gather at the parking lot at Clarizz St and Buick-Cadillac Road (behind the old Macy’s) in Bloomington to board the bus. Pre-registration is required to board the bus and is available at www.friendsoflakemonroe.org/tour. The bus will return to that parking lot.
The tour is free.
