COLUMN: Romantic movies you may or may not want to watch on Valentine’s Day

“Valentine’s Day"

This movie, including multiple plot lines, can be described as confusing or hard to follow. I believe it is both of those things, but also very relatable.

Many issues are magnified by the characters. One woman deals with finding out her boyfriend is actually married. The comedic movie makes this situation enjoyable by having her fly to his hometown and place the heart-shaped gift he gave to her on the table at the restaurant dinner he is enjoying with his wife.

Other relationships involve high schoolers, obsessed with each other in the early stages of lust and love. Even an elementary school student shows his affection for his teacher on Valentine’s Day. His grandparents’ relationship is also shown, along with their issues.

Each age and level of relationship is able to be related to. If someone is feeling more anti-love this year, they’ll also find some content for them.

While the plot lines intersect and confuse audiences, everyone is able to relate to at least one of the characters.

“Valentine’s Day” finds comedic releases for people struggling with issues, whether they’ve been together for two weeks or decades. It’s a great way to celebrate relationships while being able to laugh at the issues that can come along with them.

“Pride and Prejudice”

The universal key to a healthy relationship is known as communication. Even back in the times when spoken word and written letters were the only ways to communicate, Mr. Darcy still managed to inform Elizabeth Bennett of his undying affection for her.

They started out with mutual hatred. They were both filled with their own egos and believed the other didn’t deserve them. Sly comments forced them even farther from a relationship.

Through all of their issues, Mr. Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth and her strong, stubborn personality. He represented his love for the first time but she was too caught up in his mistakes and her misconceptions.

After he explains his reasonable intentions behind his actions, Elizabeth overcame her prejudices and fell in love with him.

Elizabeth’s inability to see the truth in his actions is represented in relationships that lack communication and understanding. Her realization of his good intentions is easy to relate to if you’ve ever made a mistake in a relationship.

Although some people would complain about the hard-to-understand old language, I’ve become accustomed to it. “Pride and Prejudice” allows for many moments to laugh at the characters’ comments.

If pride or misunderstandings have ever been an issue for you, “Pride and Prejudice” is a good watch for this Valentine's Day.

“The Notebook”

Starting with Allie’s resistance and Noah’s persistence, the foreboding toxicity reigned on later in this overrated movie.

Noah’s continuous love never waivers. Allie, on the other hand, is too caught up in the issues she developed due to her rich and strict childhood to know what she wants.

This leads the couple to go through a beautiful summer full of the goofy moments, but her uncertainty never allows for them to build a healthy relationship.

They break up after a fight induced by Noah’s doubt of the future as Allie plans to move away to college, and she reacts with physical violence.

Noah continues to write her letters every day, but Allie never replied, granted her mother hid every letter. But my question is: why didn’t she write to him?

After seeing he had built the life they had dreamed of, she goes back to him. With a ring on her finger from another man, she realizes the life with Noah was the life she had always wanted.

Everyone told me I would cry, but my heart only broke for Noah. He was constantly working on the relationship, putting up with her physical abuse and uncertainty of feelings.

While Allie’s issues may be relatable, I felt heartbroken for Noah as she went on to marry another man while Noah was busy building her dream house for her to come home to.
