LETTER: IU’s military ties deserve scrutiny

IU President Pamela Whitten recently sent out a letter celebrating IU's close ties with the U.S. military, including the Crane Naval Warfare Station.

No one can quarrel with President Whitten's admiration of “heroes,” but academia's dependence on the military deserves scrutiny. The United States is currently undertaking a $1.7 trillion "modernization" of its nuclear arsenal. Included in that are first-strike nuclear weapons opposed by arms control advocates such as the “Back from the Brink” coalition, whose platform the Bloomington City Council has endorsed.

Is IU involved in nuclear weapons projects?

Sincerely,

David Keppel, spokesperson of Bloomington Peace Action Coalition
