Three IU rugby players announced they will be entering the 2020 Major League Rugby draft last week.

Juniors Michael Johnson, Camden McCarthy and Matthew Davey will all be pursuing a professional rugby career.

According to an article by goffrugbyreport.com, Davey is one of the top prospects at the tighthead position. The tighthead is the furthest on the right of the front line of players.

Johnson was listed as one of the best lock-top players in the draft class. The lock-top is in the second row and provides stability to the front line.

The report said that Johnson has shown promise but “may need to show more to get drafted.”

The trio helped the Hoosiers capture a Big Ten championship last fall. In the spring season opener, No. 16 IU was defeated by No. 11 Davenport University 28-17. The rest of their matches were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The draft is scheduled for June 13. There are currently 11 teams in the league, with host cities ranging from Houston to Toronto. Two new teams, in Los Angeles and Dallas, are being added to the league this season and will be making selections in the draft.
