Add another honor to redshirt freshman Michael Penix Jr.’s young IU career.

On Monday, the Big Ten announced that Penix was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. This is the second time Penix has been given the honor while only playing in three games so far this season for the Hoosiers.

In East Lansing, Michigan, Penix completed 33 of 42 passes, for 286 yards, and three passing touchdowns. The freshman phenom also rushed for a touchdown, the first of his career.

“It’s really impressive for what he was able to do in that setting,” IU head coach Tom Allen said about Penix’s production in both his first road and conference game.

Penix completed a school record 20-straight passes during the second and third quarter, the second-longest streak in Big Ten history behind Chuck Long’s 22-consecutive completions in 1984.

The redshirt-freshman has now completed 69.6% of his passes this season for 809 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Hoosiers are on a bye week currently but will face Rutgers at noon on Oct. 12 for homecoming.
