Carlene Carter, renowned singer-songwriter and daughter of country star June Carter, was featured Wednesday night at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater with tickets ranging from $35 to $45.

Carter took the stage and shared her music and personal narratives with the audience. Two accompanying band members — guitarist Chris Casello and keyboardist Alan Hill — joined her on stage.

Carter's performance included sharing detailed childhood memories and stories of personal growth.

“I love Indiana y’all," she said. "So this is kind of like coming home a little bit for me in some ways."

Carter started her singing career by participating in her mother's family group, the Carter Family. She also was able to release a solo track on her stepfather, Johnny Cash's, album in 1974. Her first solo album then came out in 1978

While on stage, she told inventive, heartfelt stories about growing up with her family including tales of her grandma’s gambling habits.

Her storytelling did not go unnoticed by the audience.

“I like all the little anecdotes,” Jenny Gray, a visitor from California who wanted to learn more about the Carter family, said.

Carter performed one of her most notable songs, the 1993 country-rock hit “Every Little Thing,” which has been covered by Miranda Lambert.

After her performance of the breakup song “Easy From Now On,” the audience’s applause died down and a man in the crowd said, “That might be one of the prettiest songs ever,” to which Carter replied, “Thank you very much. I like it too.”

Kim Gray was an audience member who had a family connection to country music. She has a son who plays country music and didn’t come since he was studying, but she had just started watching a country music documentary that helped shape her opinion of the Carters.

“The Carter family is the backbone of country music," Gray said.
