Hoosiers in the NFL: Week 9 Recap

Tevin Coleman

Former IU football players were frequently in the end zone during the past week of NFL games, as both Tevin Coleman and Jordan Howard had multi-touchdown performances for their NFL teams.

Coleman’s day for the Atlanta Falcons against the Washington Redskins featured 13 rushes for 88 yards, his second-highest rushing yardage total of the season. He added five receptions for 68 yards, along with two receiving touchdowns.

Atlanta’s 38-14 win at Washington also marked three straight wins for Coleman’s team.

Howard’s two touchdowns came on the ground for the Chicago Bears in a blowout victory against the Buffalo Bills. Howard had 14 rushes for 47 yards and two scores, marking his first game with multiple touchdowns since Week 16 of the 2017 season.

Along the offensive line, it was a less pleasant week for Hoosiers in the NFL.

Offensive tackle Jason Spriggs played in his seventh game of the season for the Green Bay Packers in a 31-17 loss to the New England Patriots, while offensive guard Rodger Saffold’s Los Angeles Rams lost its first game of the season.

Los Angeles lost to New Orleans Saints, 45-35, ending Los Angeles’ run as the last undefeated team in the NFL. Saffold also had a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty called against him during the game.

Meanwhile, IU’s representative on the other Los Angeles-based team, offensive guard Dan Feeney of the Los Angeles Chargers, came out victorious in a road game. Feeney and the Chargers won, 25-17, at the Seattle Seahawks as Feeney started his 17th career NFL game.

A pair of former Hoosiers also played in NFL games during Week nine, without recording any stats.

Linebacker Chris Covington appeared in his fourth game of the season for the Dallas Cowboys in a 28-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans, while tight end Ian Thomas’ Carolina Panthers won 42-28 at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
