COLUMN: Book columnist pens her first chapter

AudreyBookColumn.jpg

Welcome to chapter one of the IDS Book Column. My name is Audrey, and I'll be your main character and story guide for this year.

Our setting is good old Bloomington Indiana, and the plot of this new story is yet to be seen. However, for those who always read the last sentence of a story before they begin, the column will be focused on books and writing within a local and national scale.

I can't wait to cover local writers and their projects, but if a new book is published that I'm dying to read, I will definitely be telling everyone to go pick it up from the bookstores.

Specific pieces will vary from week to week, sometimes I may write a review of a relevant read. Other weeks, I may write about a cool author signing or event in Bloomington.

I have been to a handful of book signings; I love them. Hopefully, there will be some to include in the column this year.

It is a rewarding experience to connect with other authors and ameture writers. Without all of the hardworking novelists and poets out there, we wouldn't have the book column!

Now for a bit more about this story's main character. Yes, this is the cliche mirror description moment of the first chapter every reader loves to hate.I come to IU from my hometown of Janesville Wisconsin. I am a Sophomore studying English and Creative Writing.

The school days are filled with lots of reading, and books that I've read a million times include, The Catcher in the Rye, Little Women, Harry Potter, Breakfast at Tiffanys and The Little Prince.

If I could be one of my favorite literary characters, I would be Jo from Little Women. Also, if I could pick any fictional world to live in, I would be a part of the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

In a dream coffee date, I would sit down with T.S Eliot for hours to talk about his poetry; because, The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock is my favorite poem. If you have never read it, be prepared, it's very long.

My world is drowning in literature, and I like it that way. Along with literature, my world is also filled with writing, that is why I was so excited to have the opportunity to write this year's book column.

I have written many short stories, news articles and poems, but I have also finished some full length novels. A few years ago, one of those novels was considered by a major publishing house. My biggest goal in life is to be a successful author, and that experience encouraged me to work harder and be more serious about my writing.

Books and writing are what I live for. Nothing makes me more excited than finding a new read, or a new favorite author, so I'm excited to continue bringing books into the IDS conversation. Along with loving books and writing, I am addicted to coffee. I have a dog, Bella, back home. I really enjoy cooking too! This should be a great story to follow, filled with awe-inspiring writers and their books. Stay tuned for chapter two.
