As Bloomington student life comes back into full swing — from Welcome Week events to students returning to campus — here are a few tips for a safe and healthy first week.
Indiana University Police Department IUPD works with local police and campus officials to aid in local alleged crimes. An IU police officer has jurisdiction on any property owned by IU and Monroe County.
Bloomington Police Department The BPD is located at 220 E. Third St. To contact the department, call 812-339-4477, or in case of an emergency, dial 911. For any stolen items off campus, you can file a non-emergency incident report on the Bloomington Police Department's website.
Indiana Lifeline Law The Lifeline Law provides immunity to some alcohol-related offenses, under certain conditions, to Hoosiers who call for medical assistance to someone else in need. This includes providing immunity for crimes of public intoxication, minor possession, minor consumption and minor transport to people who reveal themselves to law enforcement while looking for medical assistance for a person with an alcohol-related health emergency.
If someone is seeking immunity under the Lifeline Law, they must:
- Provide their full name and any other relevant information when asked by law enforcement officers.
- Remain on the scene until officers and emergency medical assistance arrive.
- Cooperate with authorities on the scene.
This law does not limit law enforcement to prosecute for other criminal offenses, including providing to a minor, operating a vehicle while intoxicated or possessing a controlled substance.
