Pitcher named co-freshman of the week

From IDS reports

Freshman starting pitcher Josie Wood was named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday after her second weekend of collegiate softball.

The recognition came after a strong weekend at the Panther Invitational that included a pair of complete game victories for the freshman against two different teams.

Wood’s complete games accounted for two of IU’s three wins at the Panther
Invitational.

Wood allowed only three runs in 20.2 innings pitched in Miami, including a 12-inning complete game win against Holy Cross on
Saturday.

She struck out 10 batters and gave up just one run in the victory against the Crusaders

Starting in the ninth inning, Wood retired 11 batters in a row to keep the game tied for IU.

Her 12 innings pitched were the most thrown in a single game by an IU player since 2010.

The historic performance was preceded by Wood’s first complete game of the weekend in a 5-2 win against Delaware on Friday.

She allowed just one earned run against Delaware and struck out four batters in seven innings.

The Denver, Indiana, native owns a 2.60 ERA and has walked nine batters this year.

Along with classmate Tara Trainer, Wood has helped the Hoosiers put together a young, yet steady pitching staff after the Hoosiers lost a veteran pithing staff from last season.

This is Wood’s first weekly honor of her career.

The last IU player to win the award was CaraMia Tsirigos in March 2014.
