Nine IU players suspended from opener for disciplinary reasons

Sophomore linebacker Tegray Scales anticipates the next play during IU's game against Purdue on Nov. 29, 2014, at Memorial Stadium.

Nine IU football players are not playing in Saturday's season opener against Southern Illinois.

Junior defensive lineman Darius Latham, senior defensive lineman Ralph Green III, sophomore linebacker Tegray Scales, sophomore offensive lineman Tim Gardner and sophomore linebacker Greg Gooch are rotation players all being held out.

Senior linebacker Tyler Burgett, sophomore defensive back Will Dawkins, junior wide receiver Isaac Griffith and sophomore running back Alex Rodriguez are the other four players not playing Saturday.

"They have not lived up to their responsibilities to the program," IU Athletics said in a statement. "We will have no further comment regarding this matter."

Green was arrested in April for an incident in which he slapped a girl across the face. Griffith was arrested in May for driving while intoxicated.
