IU lands four-star transfer

The Hoosiers added redshirt freshman cornerback transfer Wesley Green, IU Coach Kevin Wilson announced Monday.

The 5-foot-10, 175 pound freshman transferred from the University of South Carolina after redshirting his freshman season in 2014.

“We thought that would be better than anybody we could get on paper,” Wilson said.

A four-star recruit out of Martin Luther King High School in Georgia, he was rated by ESPN.com as the No. 9 prospect out of Georgia and the No. 13 cornerback in the nation.

As a senior in high school, Green intercepted five passes in 11 games.

In compliance with the NCAA transfer policy, Green will have to sit out the 2015 season.

“He’s an upper level player,” Wilson said. “We need some (defensive backs). It’s been a little bit of an Achilles’ heel in recruiting and development.”

IU recruited Green heavily in 2014, and the Hoosiers’ defensive backs coach Brandon Shelby has a strong relationship with the freshman.

Green received offers from several Power Five Conference schools.

With sophomore Donovan Clark’s back injury possibly causing the defensive back to miss the season, the Hoosiers see Green as a potential replacement in the future if the injuries persist.

Wilson has expressed approval of five freshmen defensive backs - Devonte Williams, Jonathan Crawford, Andre Brown, Tyler Green and Jameel Cook.

“We are starting to get a little bit of skill set where you’ve got some depth,” Wilson said.

Green left the South Carolina program this summer, and the program called the decision a mutual one.
