Michigan transfer Bielfeldt commits to IU

Former Michigan forward Max Bielfeldt committed to IU Wednesday, he announced via Twitter. Bielfeldt, a 6-foot-8, 245-pound graduate transfer, is eligible to play next season after graduating from Michigan April 2. He chose IU over Iowa State and Nebraska, among other schools.

“Excited to announce I’ll be spending my fifth year of eligibility at Indiana University! #B1G,” he said on Twitter.

The Peoria, Ill., native averaged 5.1 points and 3.6 rebounds in 14.5 minutes per game last season.

Bielfeldt appeared in 30 of the Wolverines’ 32 games in 2014-15, and he started three times. He won Michigan’s Sixth Man Award for his play last season and will likely assume a similar role off the bench at IU.

The graduate transfer will claim one of the two scholarships that were made available after sophomore Devin Davis and senior Hanner Mosquera-Perea were dismissed from the program May 14.

Bielfeldt’s commitment marks the third consecutive offseason in which the Hoosiers have added a graduate transfer to their roster after welcoming Evan Gordon and Nick Zeisloft in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Bielfeldt was allowed to make the move from Michigan to IU after winning an appeal which allowed him to transfer within the Big Ten Conference. The Hoosiers and Wolverines are scheduled to meet just once during the 2015-16 regular season, when IU travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., on a date to be announced later in the offseason.
