Transcription: Walnut and College-Now One-Way
Downtown Bloomington took on a slightly more metropolitan look Monday noon as the city’s two main north-south traffic arteries became one-way streets in a combined effort of the Bloomington Traffic Commission I and the State Legislature.
Walnut street is now open only to northbound traffic, and College avenue is open to traffic. The south boundary of the two one-way streets is West 2nd street, and the north boundary is the split of highway 37 at the north edge of the city. Mayor Thomas L. Lemon indicated there would be a three or four day “grace” period in which first-time offenders of the new street changes would be given only warning tickets for violations.
Mayor Lemon also said that there were no immediate plans for the installation of “walk-wait” signs for pedestrians or an increase in the existing speed limits.
The signs designating the change were covered with burlap to avoid confusing motorists before the law went into effect. Lane lines have not yet been painted upon the streets.
