Transcription: I.U. Golfers Open Today
Coach (Chili) Cochrane’s linksmen will open their Spring golf campaign today with a 36-hole match with the University of Detroit team at the Bloomington Country Club course. An 18-hole doubles round will be played this morning, with the 18-hole singles competition scheduled for this afternoon.
Five players are certain of filling the first five positions, though in no definite order. They are Robert Staats, Elliot Phillips, Jack Leer, Harold Bartholemew, and Robert Callis. All five are returning lettermen. Staats won a letter two years ago and has returned to I.U. after serving with the Army in Japan.
The sixth position was still being hotly vied for yesterday afternoon by Sheldon Whitman, Phillip Billgrist, Richard Cardwell, and John Grubb.
Four lettermen from last year’s squad will be missing from the roster this Spring. They are Jim Balch, Robert Stultz, Dick White, and James Bergsman.
Coach William Joyce, Sr., is bringing his Detroit Titans to Bloomington for the wind-up of a three-game tour. The Detroit linksmen played Purdue Thursday and went down by a score of 23-4. They played Notre Dame Friday and traveled to Bloomington last night to prepare for their last meet today.
The Hoosier sextet defeated the Titans last season at the Cascades course, 16½ - 10½.
