Transcription: ATOs Victorious
Those who attended the Little 500 bicycle race two years ago saw nothing new during Saturday’s 200 lap-battle at Memorial Stadium.
Not that the race was a ho-hum affair. Far from it. But as in ‘69 it was all Carlo Logan and Alpha Tau Omega.
If there was ever such a thing as a delayed instant replay, Logan’s last lap was it. Two years ago Logan out-sprinted Phi Delta Theta’s Lynn Olsen to give the ATO’s their first Little 500 victory. Saturday Logan held his position near the front of the pack for 15 laps.
As the white flag dropped indicating the last lap was beginning a frenzied crowd rose to its feet. It was Alpha Tau Omega and Phi Gamma Delta barreling neck-and-neck into the first turn, the second, and into the back straightaway.
Logan made his move. With his piston-like legs in high gear he’s gradually opened up a lead which literally left the two nearest pursuers in the cinders.
The finish was the climax to a great race - the fastest race ever. No one team dominated. The lead switched hands numerous times with the top four teams never more than four seconds apart.
