Columbus, Ohio (AP) – I.U. was selected Wednesday as the site next year for the Amateur Athletic Union’s men’s and women’s junior track and field championships.
The announcement by the AAU track and field committee came during the sports organization’s national convention here.
I.U. was awarded the event over Arizona State and University of Tennessee. Hoosier track coach Sam Bell, who hosted last year’s AAU decathlon nationals and an international decathlon meet, made the presentation.
The meet, which involves athletes aged 19 and under, will qualify the U.S. junior national team for an annual dual meet with their counterparts from the Soviet Union. It will take place June 24-25.
Next year’s meet will be the first combined men’s and women’s junior championships. The men’s meet has been held at Knoxville, Tenn., since 1975 while UCLA had hosted the women’s meet for the past two years.
The USA-USSR junior meet will take place in the Soviet Union next summer, with the winners of the AAU junior championships qualifying for the national team.
