BMV officials allegedly lied under oath

Despite stating under oath they were unaware of the excessive fees, numerous officials at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles knew for years and were fully aware they were overcharging Hoosier drivers with millions of dollars, the Indianapolis Star reported Monday.

BMV Commissioner R. Scott Waddell claimed he was not aware of the overcharges but it was discovered that he had received an email from a BMV official that contained information that identified a number of overcharges.

According to a number of court documents and emails between state officials, there was no indication the BMV had any intention to pay the fees back until two class-action lawsuits were filed in 2013, and they had ignored any suggestion of overcharges from internal sources.

The lawsuits that were filed against the BMV have alleged that Hoosiers may have been overcharged as much as $60 million from as early as 2002 by the BMV with excessive or illegal taxes and fees.
