Trustees approve degrees, athletic facilities

The IU Board of Trustees approved a bachelor of arts in media and a bachelor of science in game design for IU-Bloomington during ?Thursday’s meeting.

The IU Board of Trustees, IU’s governing board, legal owner and final authority, according to the IU Board of Trustees website, met Thursday at IU-Purdue University Indianapolis for the Academic Affairs and University Policies Committee, chaired by Patrick Shoulders, and the Facilities and Auxiliaries Committee, chaired by Philip Eskew.

The board will convene again today for the Finance, Audit and Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by Andrew Mohr, and the University Relations Committee, chaired by James Morris.

During the meeting, the trustees approved five new degrees.

They approved a Bachelor of Arts in Media and a Bachelor of Science in Game Design at IU-Bloomington.

The trustees also approved a bachelor of arts in law in liberal arts and a master of science in informatics at IUPUI and a bachelor of science in health sciences at ?IU-South Bend.

John S. Applegate, IU executive vice president for university academic affairs, and Todd Schmitz, IU executive director of university institutional reporting and research, updated the trustees on spring enrollment.

This spring, 43,859 students enrolled in ?IU-Bloomington.

“There’s some areas where we have records; there’s some areas where we’ve gone down,” Applegate said. “All very much within the range ?of normal.”

Applegate and Barbara Bichelmeyer, senior director of the IU Office of Online Education and IU executive associate vice president for university and regional academic affairs, also updated the trustees on online education, focusing, Applegate said, on the structures that have been put in place to support online education across the university.

During the Facilities and Auxiliaries Committee, the trustees also approved two new athletic facilities: a golf teaching facility and a rowing team storage facility, both at IU-Bloomington.

The new 1,450-square foot golf teaching facility will comprise a covered outdoor hitting area, both a women’s and men’s, a mechanical room, a restroom and a multi-purpose room. Both men’s and women’s indoor teaching bay will have bifolding outer doors.

During fair weather, the doors can be opened, allowing golfers to hit golf balls onto the practice course.

During inclement weather, the doors can be closed and a net can be dropped, allowing golfers to hit golf balls into ?the net.

“It’s a means for golfers to train in bad weather,” Thomas Morrison, IU vice president of capital planning and ?facilities, said.

The new facility will be located near the Cecil W. Weathers Golf Team Center.

Morrison estimates that construction of the new facility will begin late spring or early summer.

The new 9,945-square-foot rowing team storage would comprise three varsity bays, a repair bay, a club sport bay, storage for equipment and fuel and an office.

The new facility will be located near Lake Lemon, replacing the current facility.

Morrison estimates that construction of the new facility will also begin late spring or early summer.

“Both of these facilities will mean a lot to the members of these teams,” Morrison said.
