The Hoosiers improved to 4-1 on the season after home victories Sunday against Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. The Hoosiers look to carry their momentum into their next match.
The No. 49 Hoosiers will play a doubleheader at the IU Tennis Center Friday against Murray State (0-5) at 9 a.m. and then face No. 43 Oregon (6-1) at 6 p.m.
“We don’t know Murray State too well,” IU Coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. “I think we will see their best tennis and their best fight.”
While Murray State is looking for its first win of the season, Oregon poses another challenge.
“Oregon in the last couple of years has been a very tough team,” Wurtzman said. “We are lucky to get a team like that at home out of conference looking to make the NCAA tournament.”
In their last match, the Hoosiers defeated Western Michigan 6-1 and continued their success with a 4-0 victory against Northern Illinois.
“We have competed really well this year at a high level and played a lot of tough road matches and we didn’t back down to anyone,” Wurtzman said. “It was good teamwork as well as high tolerance for competition.”
IU has had a successful start to the season, and Wurtzman said he is looking forward to Friday.
“I think it will be an exciting match, hopefully a lot of fans will be here to give us a home court advantage,” Wurtzman said.
After the firing of former IU Coach Randy Bloemendaal, Wurtzman accepted the head coaching job Dec. 10, 2014. The former assistant head coach at Michigan has embraced the transition to another Big Ten school.
“It’s been great,” Wurtzman said. “I’m excited to be the head coach at a great university like IU with a great athletic department and just really fortunate that I was able it worked out. I don’t take it for granted.”
Though IU has many matches to be played, Wurtzman said he believes in his new foundation.
“I think we have a good solid staff that can get it done and get guys better,” Wurtzman said.
