Transcription: Hoosier Defense ‘Satisfies’ Mac
By Charlie Lyons
Coach Branch McCracken said he was “well-satisfied with the team’s defense” as he prepared to send his squad through half-court drills yesterday.
“I’m proud of the way they hustle and work together as a unit. The boys are for each other and for the team.”
Mac is particularly pleased with the performance of his sophomores in Indiana’s two victories. With the promotion of Bill Tosheff, the Hoosier mentor now has three sophomores on the starting five.
Sophomores Score 57.
The five sophomores who have seen action so far have scored 57 of the Indiana total of 109 points. Gene King has the best shooting average on the entire team, having dunked 6 of 17 pitches for a .353 shooting average. Lou Watson is second with 11 baskets on 32 attempts for a percentage of .344. Tosheff has a .321 average with 9 hoops on 28 tries.
The great defensive game played by the Hoosiers Monday night is indicated by the fact that the Spartans only had a chance to throw nineteen times in the first half. They were checked so close by the ball-hawking Macmen that they only connected on four tries.
Schwarts Effective.
Tom Schwartz did a good job off the boards and repeatedly broke up the State passing attack. Gene King, the Hoosier hustler, gave Schwartz plenty of help in the rough going.
The heavy work in preparation for the three home games remaining before Christmas recess will begin today.
The Hoosiers will be host to Xavier on Saturday and Drake on Monday, Kansas State will be the opponent on Dec. 16.
