Counselors to Begin ‘Rush’ Preparations

Transcription: Counselors to Begin ‘Rush’ Preparations

Nearly two dozen Panhellenic rush counselors will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in the Union Building to begin plans for 1960’s sorority rush. They will open the first time of a series of meetings with rushes in the coed’s dormitories on Sept. 25 proceeding rush registration, which has been set for Sept. 27 and 28. The counselors will guide the rushes through their attendance at coke parties, formal teas, and then formal rush week, which culminates with pledging and pledge dinners in February between semesters.

Parties Precede Teas.

For the first time in several years sorority coke parties have been schedules both before and after the formal teas on Nov. 5 and 6. Previously the teas have been the first event on the rushees’ calendars. According to Panhellenic advisor Miss Judy Hines, sorority rush chairmen should sign up for coke parties Thursday form 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon in Maxwell 205. Dates for the parties will run from Oct. 12 to Dec. 21 on a first-come first-served basis.

Shorten Coke Parties.

This year the parties will be 90 minutes long, which shortens the previous parties by one-half hour. Sororities may invite as many girls as they wish. However, Miss Hines pointed out, even though a rushee is not invited to a coke party, she may still pledge during formal rush week. When a coed signs up for formal rush she receives pamphlets explaining sorority life and listing the events of rush week, as well as calling cards for the weekend of formal teas. A small fee is charged each rushee when she is signed up by Panhellenic members.

Upperclassmen also may sign up for formal rush or for open rush at this time. Open rush has been going on since Orientation Week during which several coeds above the first semester freshman level have been pledged. A list of pledges will be available in about a week, according to Miss Hines.
