Track and field adds new coaches

IU Track and Field Coach Ron Helmer made three new additions to his coaching staff.

Ed Beathea, Cory Martin and Andrew Poore were added to IU’s track and field coaching staff and each will begin their coaching duties July 1.

Helmer also anticipates adding another coach sometime in the near future.

Beathea will return to Bloomington, where he was an assistant coach from 1996-2006.
Most recently, Beathea was the head coach at Ohio State University for the past two years.

“Ed has been a head coach, so he has an understanding of the complexities of having a well-rounded program,” Helmer said in a release.

Beathea will work with sprints, hurdles and relays.

Martin is a Bloomington native, was a nine-time All-American at Auburn and during his time in college, was one of the best shot put throwers in the world.

He ranks No. 16 nationally for all-time shot put with a throw of 22.10 meters.

Martin was a volunteer coach for IU for the past two years.

“I think Cory’s experience as both a state champion, an NCAA Champion and being ranked in the top 10 in the world, gives him a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the throws,” Helmer said. “And what it takes to be successful there.”

Poore graduated from IU in 2012 as a member of the track and field team under Coach Helmer.

He will be an assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator in his new position with the team.

Poore was a six-time All-American and was also a volunteer coach for IU since his graduation.

“Andrew and I got here together and saw the growth, and he was a part of the growth of our men’s program,” Helmer said. “He absolutely believes in the potential and possibilities of what we can accomplish.”
