IU Health Bloomington Hospital will eliminate 50 positions by the end of the year, IU Health spokespeople announced earlier this week.
“IU Health as a system has been working to prepare for sweeping changes in health care, which includes implementing some cost-saving measures,” Mark Moore, president and CEO of IU Health Bloomington Hospital, said in a statement.
“While we have made significant progress in reducing our expenses, it unfortunately has not been enough to achieve our cost savings target.”
Moore said the decision to eliminate even one position on the team of 3,000 individuals was reached only after much discussion and thoughtful analysis.
“However, we believe that in order to continue to achieve our mission of providing affordable and quality care to our patients, these reductions are necessary,” Moore said.
IU Health is Indiana’s only healthcare system to be nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report 16 years in a row.
Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health has also been nationally ranked in 10 out of 10 pediatric specialities by U.S. News and World Report three years in a row.
According to the IU Health website, “Indiana University Health includes Indiana’s most comprehensive academic health center and is one of the busiest hospital systems in the United States.”
