Pence backs passage of higher education loan bill

Gov. Mike Pence backed the passage of the Higher Education Student Loans Bill, SB 532, which passed the House on Monday 71-24.

“Today, Indiana legislators took a step in the right direction to make college education more affordable for Hoosier students and their families,” Pence said in a press release.

“The passage of this legislation with bipartisan support illustrates the commitment to Hoosiers in addressing and improving college affordability in our state. I am grateful to the leadership of both chambers of the General Assembly, as well as Sen. Doug Eckerty (R-Yorktown) who authored the bill in the Senate and Representative Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) who sponsored the bill in the House.”

The bill allows the Indiana Secondary Market for Education Loans to award direct loans to in-state students in order to satisfy financing gaps. Additional objectives include educating students how to responsibly finance their higher education costs.
