Earth Day events around Bloomington

Today - EARTH DAY
Free Trees: Monroe County Solid Waste Management District is giving away free saplings in honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day at their main recycling center, 3400 S. Walnut St. The event is hosted in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and DNR forester Ralph Unversaw will be present to answer questions about tree planting.

Wildflower Children’s Program: Monroe County Public Library will welcome Monroe Lake naturalist Jill Vance as she teaches children ages 6-12 how to identify wildflowers and make a craft. The event is from 5-7 p.m., in the Children’s Program Room.

Tuesday
Wildflower Adult Program: Monroe County Public Library will welcome Monroe Lake naturalist Jill Vance, who will present the history and folklore behind the names of Indiana wildflowers and give tips on identifying the flowers. The event is from 7-8 p.m. in program room 2B.

Wednesday
Green Drinks Monthly Meeting: Director of Stewardship for the Indiana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy Ellen Jacquart will speak on Monroe County’s initiative to reduce invasive species, an update on Sustaining Nature and Your Land Day and how to get a free invasive plant survey for personal property. The event is at 6 p.m. at the Banquet Facility of the Upland Brewing Company, 350 W. 11th St.

Eco Heroes Award Ceremony: The City of Bloomington Environmental Commission and Mayor Kruzan will present “Eco Hero” awards to local youth who have made an impact on the environment. The ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Bloomington City Hall atrium, 401 N. Morton St.

Friday - ARBOR DAY
Bloomington 2013 Sustainability Report: At 10 a.m. in the Hooker Room at City Hall, the Bloomington Commission on Sustainability will speak on the initial findings from the city’s first Sustainability Trends and Analysis Report. Ball State University students will share information from the Global Reporting Initiative report.

Saturday
Clothing Swap: The Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington’s Green Sanctuary Task Force will have a clothing swap 10 a.m. to noon at its church, 2120 N. Fee Lane. Clean men’s, women’s and children’s clothing donations are welcome and anyone can “shop” for free clothes as well.
