Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s second release, “II,” opens with soft, dreamy sounds, reminiscent of an early morning at Woodstock in 1969. As the album continues, the soft sounds build into groovy, upbeat rhythms, while the vocals maintain a gentle, Ariel Pink style. The album’s sound and pace diverges track to track in such a way as to keep the listener intrigued, yet always in a state of perpetual calm.
Coupled with UMO’s groovy rhythms are plenty of depressing lyrics that are simple yet powerful (I’m so tired / I can never lay down my head). Yet even this melancholia is sung with such sensitive soul power that it’s easy to feel vocalist Ruban Nielson’s emotions become your own. Check out “So Good at Being in Trouble,” for a good first taste of their catchy sound.
Overall, this album is perfect for anyone looking for a lo-fi, psychedelic sound with experimental instrumentation and delicate vocals. Highly recommended.
Go see them at the Bluebird Night Club, March 8th, 2013!
