Series addresses Middle Eastern issues

A series of three seminars on campus this week are addressing current issues affecting the Middle East.

The final lecture is 5:30 p.m. Friday in Fine Arts 102.

The lecture is titled “The False Promise of the Governance Model of
Counterinsurgency Warfare.” A seminar on Wednesday delved into the legal, ethical and strategic issues involving the use of drones, and a panel discussion Thursday focused on the current crisis in Syria.

The three seminars are sponsored by the Center for American and Global Security, the center for the Study of the Middle East and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

According to a press release, the talks are designed to take audiences “behind the headlines to gain a better understanding of forces affecting U.S. Policy and global relations.”

Jacqueline Hazelton of the University of Rochester will talk Friday on counterinsurgency warfare. She was previously a research fellow at the Belfer center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard. She is the author of “Compellence and Accommodation in Counterinsurgency Warfare.” The speech is free.
