MBV is back, back again

Maybe I have such a special connection with My Bloody Valentine’s second album, “Loveless,” because it was released on the day I was born — Nov. 4, 1991. Or maybe it’s because that album is a near-perfect masterpiece.

“Loveless” is one of the most complete, well-rounded albums I’ve ever heard. In addition to its truly one-of-a-kind sound, the songwriting from bandleader Kevin Shields is brilliant.

The melodies and chord changes are interesting and unpredictable but remain catchy and poppy.

The band’s third album, “mbv,” comes nearly 22 years after “Loveless” and a lengthy hiatus by the band.

And while it doesn’t achieve the same perfection as “Loveless,” the new album has traces of brilliance. Opener “She Found Now” is a dreamy ballad that recalls elements of Loveless standout “Sometimes.”

The second track, “Only Tomorrow,” features a jaunty drum beat, more playful than anything the band has attempted before. A long, fuzzy guitar outro brings the track to a close.

“New You” is the only song on the album that could pass for a single, with vocalist Bilinda Butcher singing a hushed, understated melody over cool, jazzy chords and a funky drum beat. But “mbv” has its share of missteps, also.

The organ sound on “Is This And Yes” sounds like it came from a child’s toy piano. The song sounds like it could fit on the first Beach House record, but it’s immature for a band that has been around for 30 years.
Closer “Wonder 2” features a loud, noisy sample. I kept thinking the airplane noise would go away, but it kept going for the duration of the track, overpowering the actual music.
The new album also lacks the melodic bass lines that made “Loveless” so interesting.
But despite “mbv”’s speed bumps and weak ending, the few standout tracks are excellent.
It might not be enough to hold fans over for another 22 years, but “mbv” is a worthwhile listen and a welcome comeback for the legendary band.
