Magazine recognizes School of Medicine faculty

More than 200 physicians from the IU School of Medicine were given the title of “Top Doc” by Seattle-based company Avvo, which produced the rankings.

The rankings were featured in Indianapolis Monthly’s November issue, which recognized the top-rated doctors in the Indianapolis area.

The issue divided doctors into categories based on specialty, such as medicine, neurology pediatrics and surgery, according to a press release.

“I was surprised, shocked and honored by the story,” Dr. George Sandusky, senior research professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, said in the press release.  
Dr. Sandusky is being honored for his neurological research, which involved tissue from century-old human brain samples, according to the press release.

“It will bring awareness about the effect that emerging genomic technology is making in a number of diseases, including brain science,” he said. “This technology will lead to new and better patient diagnosis and treatments.”

Dr. Christian Schmidt, associate professor in the school’s Department of Surgery, was featured on the magazine’s cover and was recognized as one of the area’s leading surgeons.

Dr. Anna Maria Storniolo, professor of clinical medicine, was also recognized in the issue for her work with the Komen Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center.

“We’ve changed the face of breast cancer research ... by involving the consumer in the process,” Storniolo said in the press release.
